Vortec 4800 4.8 V8 Gen 3: VIN V, RPO code LR4. Vortec 4300 4.3 V6 Gen 1: VIN X or W, RPO code LU3, LG3 Many Gen 4 motors have AFM, except for the 4.8 and the 6.0 in the 2500HD. ‘Vortec’ motors were used 1985 thru 2013 (2500HD trucks used a Vortec 6.0 until 2019) This is merely a guide to help steer you in the right direction. You should do your own due diligence to verify how your truck was factory equipped. NOTE: there may be some variations in these codes. Late model engines can be identified by the 8th digit of the VIN or by using the RPO code, which can be found on the sticker in the glovebox on older trucks. GM engines can be identified by a code in the VIN since 1972. Not sure which engine you have in your Silverado or Sierra? It can be confusing as GM made many changes and updates along the way and have reused VIN and RPO codes for different engines over the years.
